Published! Orange Coast Magazine

Now that the Daylight Saving time change is upon us, it’s time for bike racing at the Great Park in Irvine to start back up again.  I haven’t been out there this year yet, but I spent quite a few Thursday nights photographing the races for fun, and for pictures to feature on the Orange County Daily Photo blog that I contribute to.  I was pretty surprised when I got an email from Orange Coast magazine a few months ago asking if they could feature one of the pictures I shot last year.  Sure, I said.  Always nice to get published!  This issue is out on the newsstands now for a few more weeks.  I suggest you go out and grab one!

I’ll even sign it for you, if you catch me in person! 🙂

Happy 4th of July!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to drop in and tell everyone to have a great 4th of July! Make sure you see some fireworks, and eat some BBQ!

Last night, Dana and I went on down to Fred Kelly stadium in Orange, for Orange’s annual 3rd of July celebration. I’m not really sure why they do it on the 3rd, but we’ve been going the past few years. It’s a fun time to hang out, hear some patriotic music and watch a pretty good fireworks show! I shot a few of the fireworks for fun. Here ya go!

Stay safe, and we’ll see ya next time!

Of all the gin joints in all the towns…

…in all the world, she walks into mine.

Hey everyone!  Happy Wednesday to ya’ll!

It seems I keep forgetting to get to these Weekly Wednesday blogs.  Mostly because we’ve been busy shooting, working on a couple of great weddings, and a few other projects. I even realized this morning that we haven’t even blogged any of the pics from our trip to Hawaii over a month ago!  No new trips planned anytime soon, unless you count heading out to the Phoenix area next weekend to see Dana’s family, and one of her friends that is flying out from Pennsylvania.  All I know is that it’s crazy hot out there right now, and it’s right in the middle of my AZ blackout months… so Dana owes me big time!

Last summer, while hanging out with our friends Tanya and Craig, they mentioned that up at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery during the summer they show old movies on the side of a mausoleum.  We didn’t get a chance last year to get up there, so when they mentioned it again a couple weeks ago, and that they were showing “Casablanca”, we knew we had to check it out. Last weekend, we packed up the cooler, and hit the road.  What a ton of fun!  You have to get up there early.  We were actually sitting in our car, parked, on Santa Monica Blvd. for about 30 minutes or so before they let us in.  Once parked, we grabbed our chairs and blankets, a couple bottles of wine, some assorted snacks, and found a great spot off to the side of the would-be screen.  A DJ played some music, until the sun went down, and the movie started.  Even for a film nerd like me, I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen Casablanca all the way through.  Such a classic.  Great story, and really great lighting. (Told ya, I was a nerd).  We’re definitely going to be checking out more movies all summer long.  If you wanna see the schedule (they only put up a couple weeks at a time), check out Cinespia.org.

“If that plane leaves the ground and you’re not with him, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.”

Not so Weekly Wednesday!

Welcome back to, yet another, Weekly Wednesday blog post.  Just looking back, it’s been quite awhile since I’ve thrown one of these out there.  Between being pretty busy, and just forgetting, it occurred to me to update ya’ll on what’s been happening lately!

Is anyone else going to be happy when Lost is over?  I mean, I love Lost, and have since day one.  But, I just want it over and all the questions, answered.  Not that I fully expect them to answer everything, but it’s just starting to frustrate me most weeks!

I wish the weather would make up it’s mind.  Last weekend it was about 84, sunny, and hot.  Today, it’s supposed to be barely 60, and raining.  I guess that’s just spring.

I’ve started up running again.  I had started back in January, did really well for a few weeks, and then got sidetracked.  So far, a week or so in, and I’m feeling pretty good about it.  That being said, I still hate running!  I attempted to get out on my bike last Saturday.  Felt good, until, the hot Santa Ana winds picked up, nearly blowing me off of my bike and into a curb.  If we are friends on Facebook, you might have seen the video I posted.

As most you might know (I think I’ve mentioned it before), I’m part of the OC Daily Photo Blog.  It’s a group of 7 people that each assigned a day, and post up a picture showing  Orange County.  It’s been a fun project, and has forced me to get out from time to time, and shoot for fun, instead of for work.  Some of my shots are better than others, but it’s a fun project nonetheless.  Here are a few I shot a couple weeks ago, on the first day of Spring, while walking around Downtown Santa Ana.  It’s such a cool, and interesting area over there.  I’m definitely going to try and shoot over there more often…

A Fake Polaroid of a small pool hall/bar.  (side note: Polaroid is coming back!  Can not wait!)

One of the newer Loft style buildings they have been building the past few years.  It’s interesting to me how the new and the old co-exist in such a small area.

Happy Birthday to Me! Things I’ve learned…

So today I turn 35!  What did ya get me? 🙂

I never really think much about my birthday.  Since it falls in between Christmas and New Years, it just sorta gets lost in the end of the year holiday shuffle.  This year, for whatever reason, I’m thinking more about it.  Where I am in life, where I want to be, and what I need to do to make it happen.  Also, at the same time, looking back.  Esquire Magazine runs a column every month where they interview somebody called, “What I’ve learned…” It’s always interesting to me what people say.  So, bear with me for this entry, as I tell you what I’ve learned, and hopefully keep it interesting for you…

Knees won’t last forever.  I’m not sure if bad knees are hereditary or I just abuse mine, but I’m not sure how much longer mine will go before they just totally give out on me.

Love will only get you so far.  You need to actually like the person you are with.  I think that is why Dana and I get along so well.  She’s my best friend, and I really do like to spend time with her.

I’m not Indiana Jones with a camera as I thought I would be when I was 16.  I’m not traveling thru some jungle working for National Geographic.  Most of my work consists of working in a confined studio space taking pictures of things that do not move.  Some days it can be a bit boring, but I do get to sleep in my own bed every night.

I’m a bar person, not a club person.  Give me a couple drinks in a nice quiet place with some good friends and I’m there.  As much as I like loud music in my car, or when I’m working, it drives me up a wall trying to have a conversation with people if I feel like I have to yell at them.

Proper planning prevents piss-poor performance.  I’m not sure where I heard this first.  It might have been my dad when I was a kid, but I heard it again the other day and it could not be more true.

I don’t really mind the gray hairs on top of my head.  They’ve slowly been creeping in since I was 23.  It’s the gray hairs in my goatee that bug me.

I’m still completely in awe of how far technology has come in my lifetime.  On Christmas day, we were in Arizona with Dana’s family, but yet, I turned on video Skype on my laptop too see my family 800 miles away.  Just amazing to me still!

Facebook is still wild to me.  It’s fun to see what happened to people I knew from 20-25 years ago.  On the flip side, sometimes people you didn’t like from high school always tend to want to be your friend.  My memory is still pretty good about a lot of stuff.  Obviously, theirs is not!

I don’t hold grudges and I’m not a violent guy.  However, there are a couple people, that if I ever run into them, I will punch them in the face. 🙂

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received lately comes from Don Draper on “Mad Men”.  He said, “Always move forward.”  I try to do this everyday.  Moving forward keeps you from getting stuck.

And since ya’ll love the pics.  Here is one that Dana shot at me last time we were in New Orleans…

New Orleans Street Portraits | Orange County photographer

Happy Monday to everyone!  Just wanted to drop in, and show off a few pics I shot when Dana and I were on vacation a couple weeks ago.  This being my fifth trip to New Orleans, I’ve seen most everything.  Over the past 10 years, the main things that keep bringing me back are the amazing food, the great music, and incredible people watching.  In and around the French Quarter, there are dozens of musicians at any given time, playing in the street and drawing crowds.  It’s always a ton of fun, and always makes for fun photos!  Hope ya like them!

Mike the Poet

Woman in Jackson Square watching the Jazz Band playing

The Jazz Band in Jackson Square- I’ve been photographing these guys since my first trip 10 years ago.  The lineup always changes a bit, but the trombone player/singer has always been the same!

This guy was just jammin’ on the clarinet!  I also thought he was going to beat down a guy across the street that set up a drum kit, and was trying to drown him out!

Not really a portrait, but I saw this guy a few times over the course of a couple days, and really dug his Tall Bike.  I just happened to have my camera out and at the ready to finally snap off a few frames!
